Albania, officially the Republic of
Albania (Albanian: Republika e Shqipėrisė pronounced [ɾɛˈpublika ɛ ʃcipəˈɾiːs],
or simply Shqipėria) is a country in South Eastern Europe. Albania is bordered
by Greece to the south-east, Montenegro to the north, partially-recognized
Kosovo to the northeast, and the Republic of Macedonia to the east. It has a
coast on the Adriatic Sea to the west, and on the Ionian Sea to the southwest.
It is less than 72 km (45 miles) from Italy, across the Strait of Otranto which
links the Adriatic Sea to the Ionian Sea.

foreign rule and dictatorship, the country has been classified as an
emerging democracy since the 1990s. Albania has played a relevant role in
managing inter-ethnic tensions in southeastern Europe and is continuing to
work toward joining NATO and the European Union.
Albania, with troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, has been a strong
supporter of the global war on terrorism.

the Republic of Albania. It was founded in 1614 by Sulejman Pasha and became
Albania's capital city in 1920. Tirana is located at (41.33°N, 19.82°E) in
the eponymous district and county. Its average altitude is 90 meters (295.3
ft) above sea level. It lies on the Ishm River, about 20 miles (32 km)
inland.
